Hepatitis B

Is your newborn: If not, why inject them with a Hepatitis B vaccine?

Many babies are injected with a Hepatitis B vaccine immediately after birth, so parents need to be prepared.

Canada's Immunization Guide: "If a monovalent HB vaccine is provided, the preferred schedule (particularly for infants less than 12 months of age) is month 0 (first dose), month 1 and month 6. For infants immunized at birth, the dose administered at birth is month 0. The minimum interval between the first and second dose is 4 weeks; between the second and third dose is 2 months; and between the first and the third dose is 4 months."

"Hepatitis B is mainly a disease of injected-drug addicts and sex trade workers; the hepatitis B virus is acquired by contact with infected body fluids. The disease is uncommon and very many cases, especially the young, have no symptoms, recover completely and then are immune for the rest of their lives."

What You Need to Know

"Before widespread use of the Hepatitis B vaccine, annually less than 1 in 7,000,000 or 0.00001% of children at normal risk of exposure (i.e., were not born to an infected mother, did not live with an infected individual, and did not live in a community with a large number of infected individuals) contracted chronic Hepatitis B that led to fatal liver cirrhosis or cancer later in life."

Is It Safer Than Hepatitis B?

"One serious potential side effect is seizure, which may occur in about 1 in 1,300 children vaccinated with the hepatitis B vaccine. For children, the hepatitis B vaccine contains 250 mcg of aluminum. This amount is 75 times greater than the maximum safe level of aluminum in the bloodstream per day for a 7.3-pound (3.3-kilogram) infant."
